Building Pingu Palace

Last weekend was full of firsts.  First time building an igloo (exciting and exhausting).  First time on a proper timelapse project (exciting and educational).  First time snowshoeing around the Abernethy Forest (pin drop quiet and stunningly beautiful).  Real boys and girls own adventure stuff.

A big thanks especially to Paul and Helen from Walkhighlands for looking after us on Friday night, Chris Townsend for being igloo guru and an inspired site foreman, and Phil Turner for making things happen and bringing it all together.  Oh, and Terry Abraham and Tanya Morgan for being there and as irrepressible as ever!  Terry was filming for his Kickstarter project 'Cairngorms in Winter', and I expect he'll have more for you on that front shortly.  I shoveled snow and did some driving.  And took a few pictures... about 1200 give or take.  983 of them are in the sequence above.

It was a good crew.  You can read about the build in detail from Chris here, and if you want the technical lowdown (i.e all the mistakes I made) on the timelapse, follow the direct video link here - but otherwise there's a few more shots from the weekend below.  Hope you enjoy.

  1. That was wonderful, Dave & crew. Great time lapse, and a mighty fine igloo! It looked like you needed to bring more snow to the site, did I see that right?

  2. Fantastic (both individual photos and the finished sequence!) - I never appreciated how long these things take to construct even with plenty of willing volunteers!

  3. Godamit, here's me trying to figure out night exposures and you move onto time lapse. Slow down for christs sake :-)

  7. Cheers Nick, was alot of fun and learnt alot too. Igloos take ages, although this was especially large at 11ft.

  8. Thanks Hendrik, great learning curve on both projects. Yep, we did move snow around on the site. Ideally the door would be 'tunnelled' underneath the wall and a trench cut for cold air, but this was an improvised structure! Great fun but very time consuming

  9. Loved it! I'm assuming that Phil had a strong bladder to be the one inside the Igloo all that time whilst it was being built. Hopefully no yellow snow..........................

  11. :P I was pretty out of my comfort zone with the timelapse, but it's good to push and fail - only way to learn I think. Cheers for reposting the video too, Keith - fantastic support, very kind. If you need any tips with the photees, I'm no expert, but I'd be glad to help if I can. email if u like.

  14. Worked a treat eh Dave. Told ya ;) Thankfully, you didn't need any of my cards. I ended up using all I had left before heading back home. Good effort. Now you can appreciate how tricky it can be doing this timelapse stuff. Worth the effort though :) Well done and lovely pics too. Was good to see you again my friend.

  16. it was. A good amount of room for 5 lined up like sardines, plus all our gear (well, snowshoes outside, but most of the shovels etc in). Pretty comfy. But, usually there would be a cold sink, a trench for the cold to sit in. The late finish meant we didnt finish smoothing out the floor, and T slept at the low end, which was colder. Still overall alot warmer than outside though

Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures.

Maybe you could space it out better?

Great to see this, as we saw your igloo the next day (we were the couple with the black labrador who chatted to you on the Sunday morning on our way to Bynack More). We talked about the igloo for some time and the overnight camping in snow (my wife doesn't yet see the attractions!).

  30. aha, sounds like a good viewing platform ;) Glad you enjoyed

  31. Oh, Hallo! Inside the igloo was completely draft free and pretty warm in comparison to the top of Bynack More, I'll bet. The igloo has suffered some subsidence since apparently...
